Senate considers study to see how state can move water south from Lake Okeechobee

TALLAHASSEE — The state Senate wants to earmark $250,000 to study how to move Lake Okeechobee water south to the Everglades and away from the St. Lucie River estuary, a sign legislators could soon consider a permanent fix to lake discharges.

Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart, unveiled Tuesday his proposal to allow the University of Florida Water Institute to conduct a water flow study. Negron leads the Senate’s budget committee, which will meet Thursday to discuss the proposal.
